The Move To Digital Technology

General Add comments

I remember seeing images of the future when I was a child. I imagined flying cars. I imagined everything being aerodynamic. I imagined everyone wearing one piece suits like on "Mork and Mindy."

But that future hasn’t really happened and isn’t likely to anytime soon. What did happen was totally unexpected. The world changed from an analog based system to a digital system.

Do you know what digital and analog means?

Wikipedia explains:

"A digital system uses discrete (discontinuous) values, usually but not always symbolized numerically (hence called "digital") to represent information for input, processing, transmission, storage, etc. By contrast, non-digital (or analog) systems use a continuous range of values to represent information."

Did that make sense? Well, even if it doesn’t, bear with me on this. With the advent of computer in the mid twentieth century, most of the information that we use in the world was digitized, meaning that it was broken down into numbers. When you see a digital photo, what your seeing are a series of numerical code that has been broken down to such a small degree that you can’t see that the numbers are in fact producing the image.

The consequences of this shift from analog to digital on business technology and all technologies in general have had an incredible impact on our world. The future advancements made possible by breaking our world down into a series of numerical codes has revolutionized many industries. Every industry, regardless of whether it’s computer related, has become computer reliant.
